MOVIES
I was always interested in movies being born in the country that produces the highest number of films in the world. But I was introduced to proper cinema by two people, namely Abhraneel Dutta and Ramen Ghosh. I had the fortune of meeting them during a summer research program in 2012 at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) in the southern city of Chennai in India. Both of them are huge movie buffs and remain so till this date. I will always be grateful to these people for enhancing my interests in this area and in particular, for helping me appreciate the beauty of this medium. Since then, I have watched some fantastic movies and qualifies as my favorite pastime. I have tried to provide here some lists of movies that I recommend for everyone. I will keep updating these lists as much as I can for fellow buffs or for anyone who shares similar interests. My all-time favorite director is Satyajit Ray and his film, Pather Panchali is in my opinion, the most remarkable movie I have watched. The performance by Madhabi Mukherjee in Mahanagar (The Big City) and Charulata (The Lonely Wife) is the best acting I have ever seen on film.

The first list comprises movies made in India that, in my opinion, represent the very best of Indian cinema. I have realized that there is a misconception in the Western audiences regarding Indian cinema which is mainly perpetrated by the wide reach of the popular movie-making industry known as Bollywood. While these movies fall into the category of entertainment and more recently, there has been a sort of new wave in film-making even in this industry, majority of the films cater to the audience who love a getaway from realism. This does not mean that good cinema which fall into the category of art (while being entertaining) does not or did not exist in the Indian movie scene. In the list below, I have tried my best to provide a definitive collection of films that span the entire geography of India. Majority of these are products of regional cinema and are at par with the very best of International cinema. Since this list only includes films that I have watched myself so far, I am aware that there are many more gems which I still have to explore and will hopefully do so one day and add to the list. Please feel free to contact me and suggest your own recommendations that you feel are worthy of entering the list below.
